Eleanor White is a valued volunteer at The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Tillsonburg, ON. She is dependable, ready for work Monday to Friday, assisting with the initial sort of clothing donations. If you were to check in at her work station your would notice a senior hard at work. What you likely wouldn't understand however is that Eleanor is 90 years old!
After a move from Ottawa in 1995, she began her volunteering at the store. She had assisted at a Salvation Army Thrift Store in the Ottawa region, and soon became a faithful volunteer in Tillsonburg.
When asked what was the best thing about volunteering, she remarked, "I like seeing different people and doing something good to help others." Because she doesn't like "just sitting at home", Eleanor is picked up each morning (although she would rather
walk) and works in the sorting area from 9 to 5. It has only been since her ninetieth birthday in March that she has started taking breaks midmorning and afternoon.
Eleanor has gained recognition in town for her volunteer work with the Army and is affectionately known by some as "the Bag Lady" as she usually carries her lunch and supplies for the day in a GAP bag!
Eleanor loves the Lord and is a member of the United Church in a neighbouring community. Distance however, prevents her from attending there, so she walks a block to the Bible Chapel every Sunday.
Thanks for all your hard work, Eleanor. It certainly is appreciated!
