Suicide Crisis Line Volunteer: (Supervisor -- Director for Program)
Hours: Flexible (variety of shifts available due to the 24/7 schedule)
Location: Volunteer work can be done remotely from home or from the administration office. Main administration office is in Hamilton, Ontario.
Qualifications:
- Ability to care for and nurture individuals experiencing varying degrees of crisis
- Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and accurately while maintaining a sense of calm.
- Mature and sound judgment
- Willingness and ability to actively listen
- Accurate writing skills. Computer skills are an asset.
- Agrees to respect the mission and mandate of The Salvation Army
- Previous experience in social services is an asset.
Duties:
- To successfully complete the Suicide Prevention Volunteer Training Program and attend annual refresher training.
- To be an active member of the Volunteer Suicide Crisis Line Team.
- To receive, assess, and provide supportive intervention for all incoming calls to the Crisis Line during designated shift.
- To provide a listening ear, compassionate approach, information, referrals, and often emergency support to individuals in varying degrees of crisis.
- To complete call logs, report forms, and verbal reports when required.

The Freeway Coffee House - Hamilton
Barista:
The Freeway is a not for profit fair trade coffee house in the
downtown core of Hamilton. The coffee house is almost entirely staffed
by volunteers. Baristas make, serve and sell coffee and other menu
items. They clean, build friendships with customers and neighborhood
residents, they facilitate community, and host cultural events.
Baristas must be committed to urban renewal, be hospitable, willing to
learn and work within health guidelines for an eating establishment,
and be trustworthy with cash. Baristas generally work one 5 hour shift
weekly with some baristas working 5-7 hours every other week.

Door Person:
The Freeway Coffee House hosts weekly concerts. The Door Person
welcomes visitors, collects the cover, sells merchandise on behalf of
the bands, and informs patrons of future events. A door person must be
trustworthy with money, be able to make simple change in their head,
keep track of merchandise sales verses concert money, able to work
late evenings, and love music. Door Person Shifts take place on Friday
nights form 8pm till Midnight with a possibility of a Thursday night
being added in the future.

Sound Person:
The Freeway Coffee House hosts weekly concerts. A sound person helps
sound check bands, set the levels for house speakers, EQ, monitors and
individual channels. They also help set up and put away mics, DI's and
other equipment. A sound person needs to have a working knowledge of
multi channel sound boards and other basic live sound equipment. They
need to have a good ear and to be able to network with musicians, and
have bands performing in a timely manner. Experience as a musician and
a love of a wide variety of music is an asset. Concerts take place on
Friday nights with the sound person needing to arrive by 7pm and stay
till midnight. We will also be adding a Thursday night concert in the
future.

Workshop Host:
On Wednesday nights we have had a number of free community workshops.
Teaching everything from Drumming to Knitting or highlighting issues
like Ethical Investing and Hamilton's Air Quality. These workshops are
hosted, planned and facilitated by knowledgeable volunteers. If you
have a skill you would like to share in a group setting, or you are
part of a club or community organization that would like to organize

that gets used 7 days a week by people of all ages and walks of life.

Sweep the small parking lot once a week and check for garbage in the small parking lot and back drive lane daily.

Clean the large parking lot across the street of garbage once a week.
4.
Sweep the front sidewalk and the side along Knightsbridge Street once a week.

Remove weeds as required…

During a 3-4 hour shift you would be entitled to a 15-minute break.

This position would require the volunteer to work among the public, therefore proper dress code would be necessary. Closed shoes is suggested to wear for work at all times for protection against injury. Appliance Tester:
1.
Sort and test small electrical appliances such as toasters, lamps, coffee makers, etc. Be certain each item will run an entire cycle eg. Toaster brown all sides (use bread), popcorn poppers pop (use popping corn), coffee makers run cold water into hot water, etc.
2.
Test large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers, televisions etc. Be certain each item will run an entire cycle eg. Ovens heat up to correct temperature, dryers run warm air, washers and dishwashers run full cycle properly, etc. Freezers and refrigerators must run 24 – 48 hours.
3.
Make minor repairs when necessary eg. Change the electrical cord, replace a stove burner or fuse, etc.
4.
Be sure each item is clean and ready to go into the store.
5.
Attach an “AS IS” sticker to the back or bottom of the working appliance. Initial this sticker on any appliance you have tested.
6.
Take the clean, working merchandise to the pricer.
7.
If you think something might be antique or an older classic check with the pricer in the miscellaneous sorting department.
8.
Put any small appliances that do not work in a shopping cart and take to the Miscellaneous sorter before throwing into the dumpster.
This position would require the volunteer to work among the public, therefore proper dress code would be necessary. Put larger merchandise items onto the store floor as required after the items have been priced.
6.
Assist other employees with heavier tasks as required.
7.
Assist with pickups and deliveries when requested by office personel.
This position would require the volunteer to work among the public, therefore proper dress code would be necessary. Safety boots are required for this position.
Safety belts are available and it is the volunteer’s responsibility to wear these when doing the heavier work.
During a 4-5 hour shift you would be entitled to a 15 minute break.

4.
Help keep the dump pile and scrap metal straightened up.
5.
Put larger merchandise items onto the store floor as required after the items have been priced.
6.
Assist other employees with heavier tasks as required.
7.
Dust mop the store floor before the store opens, and at end of day if the floor is not too wet.
8.
Clean store windows when needed, weather permitting.
9.
Lock up the clothing bins and all the dumpsters at the end of the day.
This position would require the volunteer to work among the public, therefore proper dress code would be necessary. Safety boots are required for this position.
Safety belts are available and it is the volunteer’s responsibility to wear these when doing the heavier work.
During a 8-hour shift you would be entitled to a 30 minute lunch break and a 15 minute break in the morning and in the afternoon.

Back Room Clerk - Female:
1. Keep the kitchen items and miscellaneous items displayed in orderly manner.

Put new merchandise out as requested.

Tape game boxes and puzzle boxes. Be sure all game pieces are there.
4.
Assist the customer to find certain merchandise as required.
5.
Accept donations as they come in a friendly and professional manner.
6.
Clean and prepare the donations to be placed in the store as requested by Sorter.
7.
Clean/wash any dishes and pots as requested by Sorter.
8.
Keep store shelves and floor clean at all times (washing shelves, pick up items off floor, dust mop floor, etc.)
This position would require the volunteer to work among the public, therefore proper dress code would be necessary. Closed toe and closed heel shoes are required.
During a 4-hour shift you would be entitled to a 15 minute break.

Make sure customers have a tag with the number of clothing items they have printed on it eg. 1,2 or 3. (up to 3 items)

Put back in the correct location any items the customers decide not to purchase. (make sure each item has a price tag attached)
5.
Keep the change room clean. (mirrors, floor)
6.
Gather the empty hangers and put in boxes.

This person should be physically able to work standing and able to push the carts and clothing racks up the ramp. Able to lift bags of clothing.
This position would require the employee to work among the public, therefore proper dress code and Salvation Army nametag would be necessary. For safety reasons closed toe shoes are mandatory.
This person should possess a pleasant personality with both customers and staff members.

Separate the smaller toys into age appropriate and gender groups and bag them.

Put toys on the store shelves when requested.
8.
Break down your cardboard boxes and put into the proper bin.
9.
Keep your work area neat and clean.
10.
Assist in accepting donations from customers that come to the back in a friendly and professional manner.
